Wine Grapes are often used in wine since the natural chemical balance is perfect so they can ferment without adding sugars, acids, enzymes, or other nutrients to make the process work. Other fruits such as apples, pears, and berries can also be fermented, but the resultant wines are normally also named after the fruit they are made from such as plum wine, apple wine, blueberry wine, or elderberry wine. Some other types of wine like barley wine and sake rice wine are made from grains or starchy ingredients. They are more like beer than wine.. For these wines, the term wine refers more to the alcohol content and not the production process that creates them. Lately, we have been enjoying several types of Japanese plum wine. Most of what you find in stores is what you would expect and very sweet. One is made from a Japanese plum that is different from our plums in the US. Rather than purple, it is more orange in color and the taste is not exactly what you would expect from a plum wine. I forget the name, but I will try to get a photo of the bottle so you can see it. You won't confuse this plum wine with another, aside from a very distinct bottle, it also has several of the plums in the wine. The bottle opening is wide enough to allow these to be removed and eaten, something I am looking forward to...! |
